Downrigger Fishing Tips
If you troll on the Big Lake and don't fish Dipsies, YOU'RE ONLY CATCHING 50% of what you could be!
DIPSY TIPS:
- THREE FEET OF LINE FOR ONE FOOT OF DEPTH ON SETTING THREE. This is a very general rule. Example, 150 feet of line equals 50 feet deep.
- LINE COUNTER REELS. Makes running Dipsies much easier. If your forgetful, try resetting the line counter after setting a Dipsy. After a fish hits, let the Dipsy back out to zero.
- USE A BRAIDED MAINLINE. This makes releasing the diver much easier. 30# Spiderwire or 20# Fireline are good but Spiderwire will dig into guides and spinning reels. Remember, thinner diameter lines will get deeper.
- USE A LONG, STIFF ROD. Ten foot rods made specifically for dipsies are great.
- DON'T GO TOO LIGHT. 20# minimum.
- USE THE DIAL CORRECTLY. The dial on the back of the Dipsy is made to be read facing the front of the boat.
- KEEP DIPSY RODS AWAY FROM DOWNRIGGERS. I like mine a few feet from the back of the boat where the downriggers are located.
- PLACE RODS LOW TO THE WATER. Placing the rods almost parallel to the water leaves less line above the water for fish to tangle.
